You asked me for some advise about your breeding
and my over-all impressions of the Breed in Russia.
Well - I could only judge the construction & temperament at the show
so I have no idea of your health problems etc. - if you have any,
All I can say is that I thought the standard quite high & some of
your dogs would do well in competition in the UK. I thought the
males of a better standard overall than females - which surprised me.
Temperament was excellent & I was aware that some exhibits were
being handled by (?) professionals - but that reflected even more on
the temperament as they were confident & happy to show for anyone.
Generally the construction was good and balanced. Some exhibits
needed more front angulation and fore-chest, but that is a problem
here too! One recurring problem was the bite. I am not a 'mouth'
fanatic but quite a number of exhibits had less that
ideal scissor bites, so this needs to be watched when breeding. (Incidentally,
I found the same problem in Holland!) Some of the bitches had rather
narrow fore-face : the standard does ask for a wide muzzle and well
chiselled, and this can detract from the expression if they are too
fine.
Personally, I don't like too much trimming around
the neck and shoulders - just neat subtle trimming should be enough
to enhance the outline. You can't make a good front angulation by
trimming! and there should not be a cut line under the tummy of the
body feathering. With such a high entry, which was a huge compliment
to me, I was not able to give a full critique as I would have wished.
Movement on the whole was good - better than a
lot in the UK ! Generally speaking I think you have some good and
careful breeding with a good 'eye' for the Standard. Don't be in too
much of a hurry - wait and look at what you are producing, and above
all - keep that desired lovely temperament. For me, it said it all,
when the young lady (Helen) danced with her lovely dark bitch after
all the judging was over. She was a delight and showed the true bond
between a handler and her gentle, biddable Golden.
